Expert Advice = Limits on Electricity & Wireless

  • In Massachusetts, limits exist to prevent electric shock;
  • In other states, limits exist on magnetic and electric fields from high-voltage power lines;
  • In the US, limits on cell tower transmissions are meant to prevent heating;
  • In India, cell tower transmissions are much lower than in the US to reduce harmful biological effects;
  • In Chile, limits exist on cell towers near hospitals or schools;
  • In Cyprus, WiFi is prohibited in pediatric wards and elementary schools;
  • French regulators ordered a pause on sales of the Apple iPhone 12 since the radiation exceeded their limits – Apple promised to reduce radiation with a software update.

A SAMPLE OF SCIENTISTS WITH CONCERNS:

Dr. Robert Becker, MD (1923 – 2008), became famous for bringing media and a generation’s
attention to the dangers of high-voltage power lines. Despite his hitherto successful career, he lost his research contracts and retired early because by speaking out he angered both business and government,
including the defense department. He wrote the cult classic The Body Electric and, because he discovered electricity could heal bone, was nominated twice for a Nobel Prize. As most depend on industry and defense interests, scientists today continue to face the challenge of losing research contracts when raising concerns, meaning few have the luxury to speak.

Dr. Chris Portier, recently retired from the US NIEHS, chaired the committee at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that in 2015 stated wireless signals or radiofrequencies were a 2b ‘possible’ carcinogen. Many original members of the committee have since stated wireless is carcinogenic and the classification must be strengthened. In 2022 for a brain cancer lawsuit, Portier wrote 176 pages of testimony with scientific references to prove cellphones cause brain cancer – however, his and other expert testimony in support of brain cancer plaintiffs was barred.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in June 2001 classified low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) from electricity as possibly carcinogenic (2B), despite observers to the commission including the National Grid Company plc. In , the IARC classified radiofrequency radiation (e.g. shortwave, wireless signals) as possibility carcinogenic (2B) as well, despite examining only a few studies, zero animal studies, and including a large, industry-funded study with selection bias (The Interphone Study) that underplayed brain, acoustic nerve, and parotid gland tumors. The IARC is a branch of the WHO, and their assessments required independent scientists. However, the WHO separately established the WHO EMF Project, now renamed, led by industry scientists to write the IARC reports and serve for public relations.

Dr. Henry Lai, PhD, and Dr. Narinda Singh, PhD, in 1995 published that wireless signals broke DNA strands, and then dealt with industry attempts to discredit their work. Dr. Singh is best known for developing the comet assay, a technique used around the world to detect DNA breaks. Overwhelming DNA breaks tied to wireless exposure can lead not just to cancer, but to birth defects, neurological troubles, and other harm. Dr. Lai, who became a research professor at the University of Washington, has documented the amount of peer-reviewed DNA breaks in science and other concrete evidence for the public at Bioinitiative.org.

 – Dr. Olle Johansson, PhD, discovered that computers even without wireless could change the skin biome, with markers such as mast cells increasing. Dr. Johansson is now retired from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, but continues with research and advocacy for limits. Dr. Johansson has highlighted in his speaking engagements that cancer is the least of his concerns, but rather he is most concerned about effects on bacteria, immune function, reproductive ability and the viability of future generations.

Dr. Neil Cherry, PhD (1946-2003) published on how modulation of small amounts of non-ionizing radiation, including solar and geomagnetic activity (such as thunderstorms) can have harmful effects. Cherry also examined epidemiology and cancer clusters, such as high rates of cancer in the line of transmissions from the Sutro Tower in San Francisco. He provided testimony and reports in favor of limiting such exposures. In 2002 Dr. Cherry was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to science, education and the community.

Dr. Sam Milham, PhD, used his access to a WA state database to find workers exposed to more non-ionizing radiation, such as electricians,  contracted leukemia more than would be expected, sparking other researchers to look and find similar patterns. After retirement, he did further research and discovered that when and where electricity was newly introduced, ‘diseases of civilization’ like heart disease rose. He discusses his findings and history in the easy read Dirty Electricity. In more recent publications, Milham explains with electricity that the greatest problem is pulsing, such as surges and harmonics, on ‘dirty’ electrical lines. Utilities refer to ‘dirty’ electricity as poor power quality, and this poor power quality is known to interfere with sensitive electronics and limit their lifetime.

BioInitiative (.org) scientists include many with notable credentials and expertise in the specific field of non-ionizing radiation, compiling scientific summaries in areas such as genetics and leukemia, but the initiative has been discredited online largely by industry front groups, AI, and Wikipedia (articles on Wikipedia can be written by anyone) – including by industry-funded ‘experts’ with lesser expertise. The Bioinitiative was a response to captured non-ionizing ‘standard-setting’ organizations, including sub-factions within the WHO, who refused to address copious scientific evidence of harm below thermal or heating levels. Dr. Lennart Hardell has written many criticisms regarding industry affiliations of these organizations, although some simply change names or form a new group to avoid identification. Examples: Hardell L, Walker MJ, Walhjalt B, Friedman LS, Richter ED. Secret ties to industry and conflicting interests in cancer research. Am J Ind Med. 2007;50(3):227-233. doi:10.1002/ajim.20357 — AND — Hardell L, Nyberg R. Appeals that matter or not on a moratorium on the deployment of the fifth generation, 5G, for microwave radiation. Mol Clin Oncol. 2020;12(3):247-257. doi:10.3892/mco.2020.1984

EMF-scientist (dot org) includes many scientists signed to an open letter to the United Nations and WHO requesting safer guidelines developed by an independent, transparent committee based on a listing of scientific evidence that ‘goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harm to both animal and plant life.’

ICBE-EMF (.org) includes current non-ionizing scientists and relevant experts with expertise in non-ionizing radiation, and came into existence to recommend safer practices and provide criticism when warranted. This organization presents potential compromises to allow continued wireless usage, although some experts say a stronger stance such as a complete ban is necessary.
