You can start with radiation limits at home. Start with the easiest and cheapest steps, such as unplugging. Every step helps reduce exposure for us all.
Personal protection can be an expense. Currently, ending all exposures is impossible, but reducing the intensity and creating a sanctuary for sleep does help. #1: Distance is your friend for wireless and electricity – distance yourself from any antennas as well as powerful sources of electricity (e.g. electrical control rooms).
#2: Turn unused electrical circuits off permanently if you know how to do so safely
- Each electrical circuit emits an electric and magnetic field – turning the circuit off reduces field strength even if not all fields may vanish.
- Fire hazard: With rare exception, you cannot turn electrical circuits on and off on a regular basis from the electrical circuit board as it may damage the wiring and increase fire hazards.
#3: Unplug or disable as many unused devices as possible – any device plugged in has a magnetic field, even if not actively in use, and may have other fields from passive electrical consumption and unintentional transmissions, the latter known as ‘poor power quality’ which can lead to extra frequencies (e.g. harmonics, transients, ‘surges’) and fields extending perhaps 5 feet from the electrical lines, more or less.
- An inverter (such as DC/AC inverter on a personal solar installation or a small ‘wall wart‘ on a hair dryer) adds poor power quality – examples include computers, printers, energy-saving appliances
- Modern lighting also contributes to power quality problems – turn lighting off whenever possible! Incandescents, however, are fine for power quality and also generate healthier infrared light.
- Avoid personal solar or charging electrical vehicles as these can add strong fields and a surplus of harmonics and transients to the electrical lines in your home – remediation of this poor power quality costs greatly.
#4: Limit field strength from electricity by knowing and limiting hazards
- The closer & longer the exposure the worse the exposure, so avoid use of computers on laptops and use of electric blankets.
- The smaller the device, the greater the field – e.g. electric razors have very strong electric and magnetic fields.
- CFL, magnetic, and low-voltage halogen light bulbs also have problematic stronger fields from electricity – keep your distance from these as well such as by bathroom mirrors.
- Induction stoves have very strong fields – avoid them.
#5: Identify circuits to use for charging and electrical use – there may be a circuit in the home that does not run near the bedroom or common living areas
- There may be a circuit in the home that does not run near the bedroom or common living areas. If so, select this circuit to utilize most often for plugging in inverters and heavy loads.
- Fire hazard: Be careful not to overload a single circuit, as that can be a fire hazard.
#6: Electrical wiring check – Where possible, check to make sure electrical wiring errors do not exist, as these increase fields and can increase fire hazards.
- Wiring errors may show as flickering lights, frequent circuit breaker trips, and a shock or ‘static electricity’ when touching light switches.
- Wiring errors may also show through outlets, switches, or a breaker box that are warm or hot, discolored or burnt, buzzing or crackling, or emitting sparks.
- If you have the equipment and expertise, magnetic fields above 0.5 milliTesla can indicate a wiring error.
#7: Limit cellphone radiation
- Prefer texts, and read and type them with wireless disabled.
- Distance – If making a call, use the speakerphone and keep the phone off your body.
- Schedule – Set a personal schedule for making and receiving calls and texts, notifying contacts when you will turn on wireless connectivity for your cellphone.
- AirTube – Optionally, get ‘airtube’ headphones for your cellphone.
- Turn off WiFi, Bluetooth, cellular data, and make sure in settings that wireless is ‘disabled’. Hearing aids often transmit – turn Bluetooth off using the manual.
- Turn off ‘Find your phone’ or ‘Location services’.
- Turn off 5G, such as on iPhone 12 going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and tapping on LTE.
- Delete apps – Reduce the number of apps on your wireless devices, as each app adds extra transmissions (and tracks you).
- Buy a Wired Phone – Get a corded landline or wired soft-phone if possible (see below), and avoid Apple products as they make it difficult and more expensive to avoid wireless transmissions.
#8: Avoid stronger radiation from mobile wireless devices because of:
- a poor signal,
- moving rapidly (as in moving car)
- surrounding metal (as in a car or elevator)
#9: Opt out of Amazon Sidewalk (Alexa, Ring) to keep Amazon from increasing wireless density and tracking through Alexa and Ring.
- Update Apple devices before opting out.
- Open Alexa App > More > Settings > Account Settings > Amazon Sidewalk > Turn Amazon Sidewalk on or off for your account. If Ring is linked, then Ring will be disabled as well.
- Check if Alexa and Ring Linked. Open Ring App > Menu > Account > Linked Accounts
- Disable Ring. Open Ring App and tap 3 lines in upper left corner of screen > Control Center > Sidewalk > Tap Sidewalk slider button and confirm you wish to disable Sidewalk
#10: Request a wired or analog utility meter from your utility – consider distance from the meters and purchasing a shield from specialized retailers if your utility refuses.
- If you can’t get rid of the smart meter transmissions through the utility, consider buying a smart meter shield to reduce the power density – it is only a partial solution but better than nothing. #11: Prefer appliances and devices that are not ‘smart’ and do not have an FCC ID tag that indicates intentional wireless transmissions. Where needed and possible, use old non-digital appliances.
#12: Avoid scams. Avoid retailers that offer stickers and other scams to reduce radiation exposures – check reviews and other indications of trustworthiness as well.
#13: Buy a landline, text messaging service, or hard-wired computer phone (soft-phone) to replace indoor wireless phones and your cellphone.

#14: If you can’t End, then Reduce WiFi. If the equipment does not belong to you and you cannot get any agreement to hard-wire, consider making an agreement to purchase either a router guard or a router with reduced transmissions and then helping to set it up for reduced radiation.

#15: Get a hard-wired internet connection for your computer and other wireless devices. Purchase a modem, port switch and ethernet cords that you can run from the router to the computer and other devices for an internet connection. Do not use Power Over Ethernet, which carries a lot of extra frequencies along electrical lines. Elements Needed:
- Modem – For a modem, use lower bandwidth equipment rated at 10/100 mbps to lessen radiation. You can try the Arris SB8200 cable modem or a Netgear model number CM1150V.
- Router – For updated security, but more money, you can get the JRS 100 Eco on Asus Router – this uses 90% less radiation if or when you use WiFi, and nothing if it is not in use by going into standby mode. To go into standby mode, make sure that your devices including appliances are not automatically connected to the router WiFi as continuous connectivity will prevent standby mode. - Set Router Controls: You can find a generic explanation of using router controls with the instructions here, or more specifically in your manual and through customer service.
- Ethernet Cables – Use Cat 6/ 7/ 8 shielded ethernet cables. Cat 6 are just fine.
- To allow grounding, choose cables with metal endings. Note some are not correctly made to carry the grounding fully through. Electrahealth dot com has shielded cables.
- You’ll need a short cable for between your router and ethernet port switch.
- You’ll need longer cables to go from the ethernet port switch to the computer(s).
- If grounding, then purchase the longer cable(s) in relation to how you ground (see below).
- Switch – For a port switch, if you want to ground:
Choose: TP-Link 8 Port Ethernet Network Switch model no. TL SG108Purchase an ethernet grounding adapter such as at Electrahealth dot com. Place this device between 2 of your cat cables to join them, and plug it into the wall to access the plug’s ground.If you don’t have an ethernet port on your computer to plug in the ethernet cable, you can purchase a USB-C to ethernet adapter with a grounding ability instead of the one above – you can find one at Electrahealth.Important note: Plugs often lack good grounding ability. To fix this you can use the same grounding technique as above, but instead of plugging in to the wall, attach a double-sided alligator clip to the plug prongs and attach the other side of the alligator clips to an extension cord which attaches to an outdoor grounding rod. The grounding rod should be set away from electrical lines, of course, in an area that has a good ground. LessEMF has a grounding rod with an attached extension wire, but you can also go to a local electrical store.
#16: Disable Wireless: When you are offline or connected through a wire to the internet, select ‘wireless disabled’ on your computer by going into network settings. Do not just click on airplane mode or on the icons, as this no longer insures wireless is disabled. Also:
- Ensure mouse, headphones, printer, etc., are also hard wired instead of wireless.
- Sensors can generate EMFs, and some people are sensitive to them as well as to accompanying lights. You may want to purchase a roller ball mouse instead of one with sensors.
#17: Hard Wire your Cellphone: You can then to use it like a computer with wireless disabled, but know that you cannot make phone calls or send texts through a wired connection on a cellphone (technically possible, but U.S. companies don’t allow it).
- Use a special adapter that connects to your phone’s port (USB-C, Lightning, or micro-USB) on one side and has an Ethernet port on the other.
- You will also need an Ethernet cable that is connected to the internet through a switch, modem, and router to insert into the Ethernet port.
- Be sure to select ‘wireless disabled’ and not just airplane mode, as some cellphones will otherwise allow wireless transmission.
#18: Keep checking wireless is disabled even after hard-wiring equipment.
- Wireless connections can get turned back on after software updates or a blackout.
- Comcast modems are notorious for doing so.
- Check your settings and check measurements to verify if possible.
- Even after connecting your computer to an ethernet cord, the computer can still transmit wirelessly. Hitting airplane mode and clicking off the bluetooth icon can fail. Make sure to select ‘wireless disabled’ on your computer by going into the network settings.
#19: Measuring Exposures: If you can’t get meters, you can guess that everything transmits anyway – your TV, watch, computer, indoor bike, smart appliances, alarm clock, car, etc. Find ways to get rid of it in favor of older options or keep checking wireless is disabled.
A. Purchases: Buying and owning an RF meter is useful for testing wireless, as these exposures often change. Rental is possible, and especially useful for testing AC fields from electricity, as these rarely change.
- Some libraries in Massachusetts have meters, such as in Bedford and Pittsfield. Check yours.
- Rental is possible such as through Massachusetts-based MagneticSciences dot com.
- Meters can be purchased online.

- Do not get a ‘TriField’ meter with an arrow for a dial as by experience these can have readings that are completely wrong.
D. Power Quality or Line Noise Meter Recommendations – None. These meters not necessary for home use, because measurements are terrible all over Massachusetts, carried through the connected grid, and the time and money should simply be spent on remediation instead of measuring power quality.
- You can use a cheap AM radio and turn the dial all the way left and all the way right to see if static increases at either end: this would detect nearby poor power quality which can extend about 5 feet from wires and frequencies at the lower or higher end.
#20: Because other shielding options can be complicated, expensive, and backfire, start with the above options before considering blocking signals with other shielding materials as you’ll need to verify efficacy and avoid mistakes where the shielding materials accidentally radiate and intensify exposures.
- Bedroom Circuits: To test if electrical circuits impact the bedroom, you can try turning off the electrical circuits from the circuit board and see if any have an impact near the bedroom. You can also use a magnetic field meter to see if there are fields – these are expensive, however. You can use a cheap AM/FM radio to see if there is poor power quality as reflected by increased static at the far left and right of the AM radio – transmissions can extend 5 feet from wires. - Bed Canopy: If you decide to get a shielded bed canopy like SwissShield, you can get one without grounding if you are certain you can turn off the bedroom circuit and any other electrical circuits around the bedroom that may pass by (such as from a room below).
